Determination of Aflatoxins in Cosmetic Raw Materials and Finished Products. H.J. Chou and M.W. Trucksess, CFSAN, FDA, 200 C St. S.W., Washington, D. C. 20204

Thin layer chromatographic (TLC) and liquid chromatographic (LC) procedures were developed for the determination of aflatoxins B1, B2, G1, and G2 in plant-derived cosmetic raw materials and in cosmetic finished products containing these raw materials. Aflatoxins were extracted from cosmetic raw materials and determined by two dimensional TLC. Aflatoxins were isolated from cosmetic finished products by solvent extraction and immunoaffinity column chromatography, derivatized with trifluoroacetic acid, and determined by LC. Sixteen plant-derived cosmetic raw materials were analyzed for aflatoxins. AF B1 was found in one crude coconut oil sample at 6 ng/g. In a survey of cosmetic finished products, no aflatoxins were found in the six products analyzed.
