Abrasion of Plasma Sprayed Coatings Using a Taber Abraser. G.S. Fischman1, S.A. Brown1, G. Walz2.   1CDRH, FDA, Rockville, MD, 2University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia.

One of the common industrial methods for determining the quality of a plasma sprayed coating for device applications uses a Taber Abraser. Due to the hardness, friability and morphology of the coatings, the abrasion data lead to false conclusions. Current testing of abrasion in these coatings at DMMS has caused us to question not the method, but the protocols used to run these tests. This poster describes the method, experiments and problems that will likely lead to the development of a test method standard for abrasion of plasma sprayed coatings to be used for device evaluation.
