Recent outbreaks of paralytic and neurotoxic shellfish poisoning have been investigated with sensitive assays, leading to the first detection of the saxitoxins in human serum and brevetoxins in human urine. These results provide insights regarding both the syndromes and prospects for improved detection methods in regulatory programs.
