The Regulatory Fish Encyclopedia (RFE) includes images of fish and their biochemical patterns. The fish images were drum-scanned from high resolution photographs taken on 4"x5" 64 ISO, tungsten-balanced, E-6 process film on a specially modified Polaroid MP4 photographic system designed to provide variable toplighting and uniform backlighting. Selected images of whole ("in the round") fish and their marketed forms are accessible and browsable on the world wide web at http://vm.cfsan.fda.gov/~frf/rfe0.html Associated with these fish images will be detailed hypertext taxonomic descriptions with annotated illustrations for all species. Such taxonomic descriptions are currently available for several gadid fishes (e.g., Atlantic cod, Pacific cod, and pollock) at http://vm.cfsan.fda.gov/~frf/x, where x=gmorhua.htm, or =gadmacro.htm, or =pollock.htm, respectively, and are in an advanced state of preparation for a number of lutjanid (snapper) species. For selected families such as snappers and cods, the future development of web-based multiple entry keys is envisioned.
